Biography

Dr. Elisabet Garriga holds a Ph.D. in Management from IESE Business School, Barcelona (2007), a Master in Management Science (MMS) from IESE Business School, Barcelona (2004), and a BA in Economics and Business Administration (INEDE) and Philosophy from the University of Barcelona (1998).

Dr. Garriga’s research focuses on understanding, analyzing, and solving three interconnected problems: 1) How organizations balance value creation and value destruction during turbulent times, particularly addressing climate change, inequality, poverty, and disability. Her work specifically explores ways organizations can generate more value while preventing factors that lead to value destruction, such as corruption, fraud, and injustice 2) How organizations can effectively measure their value creation and destruction by developing new performance management principles and metrics. This includes integrating diverse methodologies and approaches, and creating innovative concepts, methods, and indicators 3) How organizations can become more responsible and sustainable, contributing to social progress and peace, especially in controversial sectors such as mining and defense industries.

Her research integrates a variety of theoretical frameworks, including Stakeholder Theory, Network Theory, and Systems Thinking, alongside Performance Management, Impact Evaluation, and Development Economics. Dr. Garriga has authored over 10 papers in peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Business Ethics, and has contributed to several book chapters in both academic and specialized publications. Since 2019, she has served as a section editor for the Journal of Business Ethics in the Corporate Responsibility: Theoretical and Qualitative Issues section".

Over the past fifteen years, Dr. Garriga has worked extensively with companies, social businesses, and NGOs to make a meaningful impact in practice. She has assisted managers, executives, and stakeholders in designing, developing, and measuring sustainability and social impact projects in Spain, Peru, Mexico, Morocco, China, and Bangladesh. She has been a research associate at Social Business City Barcelona, affiliated with the Yunus Centre (Bangladesh).

As an active researcher engaged in the academic community, Dr. Garriga has participated in several conferences, including the AOM Annual Meeting, the EURAM Annual Meeting, the BALAS Annual Meeting, the SBE Annual Meeting, the EBEN Annual Conference, and the IABS Annual Meeting.

For the past fifteen years, Dr. Garriga has taught courses on Sustainability, Strategy, and Performance Systems, holding academic positions at York University (Canada), EADA Business School (Spain), Centrum Business School (Peru), UOC (Spain), and the University of Bergamo (Italy). She has also been a visiting scholar at the Darden School of Business (University of Virginia, USA) and CEIBS (China).
