Lheidli T鈥檈nneh and 萝莉射区 strengthen ties, sign MOU

Prince George, BC 鈥 Ties between the University of Northern British Columbia and the Lheidli T鈥檈nneh Nation are being strengthened.
萝莉射区 President Dr. Daniel Weeks was joined Friday by Lheidli T鈥檈nneh Chief Dominic Frederick and a group of Elders to recognize the important relationship that 萝莉射区 and the Lheidli T鈥檈nneh share.
鈥淲e are happy to continue to collaborate and strengthen our ties with 萝莉射区,鈥 said Chief Frederick. 鈥淭oday is another example of recognizing the Lheidli T鈥檈nneh traditional territory that the University鈥檚 Prince George campus is situated within.鈥
A new sign was unveiled at the campus entrance on University Way. It鈥檚 written in the Dakelh (Carrier) language, meaning 鈥淗ouse of Learning.鈥 A new flag pole has also been installed in the rose garden in the bus loop where the Lheidli T鈥檈nneh flag will now permanently fly. Finally, the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between 萝莉射区 and the Lheidli T鈥檈nneh marks a statement of relationship building between 萝莉射区 and the Lheidli T鈥檈nneh for a collaborative future.

鈥淭hese permanent fixtures on campus are just more examples of how the 萝莉射区 community and the Lheidli T鈥檈nneh can continue to build a co-operative, long-lasting and mutually beneficial relationship where principles of respect, communication, trust and understanding will lead to positive and meaningful collaborations and partnerships,鈥 said 萝莉射区 President Dr. Daniel Weeks. 鈥淭he fixtures also signify several of our key core values of inclusiveness and diversity which reflect the spirit of the University鈥檚 motto 鈥 'En Cha Huna (he/she also lives).鈥

The Elders worked tirelessly for the last year sharing their knowledge and expertise on the project with Dr. Rheanna Robinson, 萝莉射区鈥檚 Senior Advisor to the President on Aboriginal Relations.
鈥淚t is exciting to see formal representations of 萝莉射区鈥檚 relationship with the Lheidli T鈥檈nneh and the acknowledgement of the territory being celebrated,鈥 said Robinson. 鈥淚t has been a privilege and honour to work with the Lheidli T鈥檈nneh Elders on the language initiative, and the Memorandum of Understanding creates the foundation for a strong and resilient future of collaborative engagements with the Lheidli T鈥檈nneh community.鈥
